In papers filed for proof, John Thompson filed Naturalization papers showing he became a naturalized citizen on 22 Oct 1860 in Newhampton, Chickasaw County, Iowa and Declaration of Intention papers showing he declard his intent to become a citizen in Winnebago County, Illinois. To fulfill the citizenship requirements he had to reside in the U.S. at least five years and within the state of Iowa at least one year.
