JAMES MARTIN HOPPE Age 91, of Ontario, California, passed away quietly in his sleep on 23 Dec 2018. He was born in Pomona, CA, on Feb 1, 1927, the first son of Henri and Florine Hoppe. He spent much of his youth in Corona but moved to Hollywood in his teens and graduated from Hollywood High in 1944. Soon thereafter he enlisted in the Navy, where he served his country for 2 years. His specialty was radio maintenance and repair. He used those skills to obtain a job at Packard Bell, where he met his future wife, Betty Smith (previously deceased in 2010). They married in 1949. They raised 4 children, Patricia, David (deceased in 2002)), Donald and Steven. Like many others who were in the armed forces during WW2, he used the GI bill to secure a college education. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1952 with a BS in Pharmacy. In 1956 he joined Gemmel Pharmacy in Ontario and worked for that company for the rest of his working life. He was respected and loved by the people he worked with and managed. His many customers still speak highly of his services to them. One of his hobbies was gardening. His family still remembers his wonderful tomatoes, corn, snow peas and zucchini. He was also enjoyed carpentry. He took great pride in the tool shed he built from scratch. Along with his three living children, he is survived by 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren (soon to be 7). No services are planned. If you wish to make a donation on his behalf, he was a strong supporter of the Alzheimer's Association. Source: Inland Valley Daily Bulletin on Jan. 27, 2019 (legacy.com) |
