Hannover, Prussia

Our Hoppe family came from the area known as Hannover. It extended from the Harz Mountains on the south to the North Sea on the north, and from the Netherlands on the west to Prussian Saxony, Brandenburg, and Brunswick on the east. The city of Hannover was the capital. For most of the 1700's, both Hannover and Great Britain were ruled by King George I.

Just three years before our Hoppe family immigrated, the region was involved in a war with Austria, called the Seven Weeks' War (1866). The settlement of this war resulted in Hannover becoming a part of the Kingdom of Prussia. Hannover is now part of Lower Saxony State.
